Rationale
The Monolith is arguably the most enduring image from the classic film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. The alien construction conveys mystery and mathematical precision in its simplistic black design. This simplicity, however, belies the technological and scientific superiority contained within this dark edifice. The monolith is representative of the step-change within mankind’s evolutionary development, from an ape’s first use of a tool, to the over–reliance of computers, to the ultimate subordination of humanity by the technology it has spawned.
The Monolith signifies modernity and evolutionary advancement, but its caveat is that this improvement should not just be about technical and physical amelioration but also spiritual fulfillment.
